What it is

A gentle laser that works near the surface

LaseMD Ultra is a non-ablative fractional laser from Cynosure. It treats tiny, evenly spaced columns of skin and leaves the skin between them untouched, which is why recovery is measured in days rather than weeks.

Its 1927nm Thulium wavelength works in the upper layers of the skin, where sun damage, uneven pigment, and dull texture live. As those treated columns heal, damaged pigment works its way up and out, and the skin starts building new collagen.

Treatments are done by Amy Kondi, our lead licensed esthetician, or Kassidy O'Connell. Amy has more than ten years of experience and LaseMD is one of her specialties.

LaseMD isn't a peel, and you won't flake. What you'll feel for a few days is skin like fine sandpaper. That's treated pigment and old cells working their way out. Leave it alone, and about a week later your skin looks brighter and feels smoother than when you walked in.

What It Treats

Built for sun damage and surface concerns

Alaska summers bring long days of sun, and a lot of that exposure shows up later as spots and uneven tone. Fall and winter, with less sun, are the easiest time of year to treat it.

Sun damage and spots

Sunspots, freckling, and the uneven brown tone that builds up after years outdoors.

Dull, rough texture

That flat, tired look that comes from built-up surface damage and congestion.

Melasma and uneven tone

Treated cautiously, with conservative settings. Melasma is managed rather than cured, and we'll be honest about that.

Pores and mild scarring

Enlarged pores and shallow texture can soften over a series. Deeper acne scarring usually needs RF microneedling as well.

Fine lines

Early, surface-level lines, including crepey skin around the eyes. Deeper wrinkles need a different tool.

Neck, chest, and hands

Because it's gentle, LaseMD is a good fit for thinner skin that often gets left out of treatment plans.

How it works

Thulium energy, delivered in a fraction of the skin

The 1927nm wavelength is absorbed by water in the skin, which keeps its effect shallow and controlled. Because only a fraction of the skin is treated at a time, the untouched skin around each column speeds healing.

Right after treatment, those columns briefly let serums reach deeper than they would on untreated skin, so the products applied at the end of your session matter.

  • Settings adjusted to your skin type and what you're treating
  • Treats a fraction of the skin, leaving the rest intact
  • A cooling device keeps you comfortable, with no numbing cream
  • Serums applied after treatment absorb more deeply

Your appointment

What to expect

The laser portion takes about 20 to 30 minutes. There's no numbing and no waiting for it to set in.

01
Cleanse

Come with bare skin: no makeup, sunscreen, or other products. We cleanse and go over your plan and settings.

02
Cooling

No numbing cream. A cooling device runs alongside the laser, and that's all most people need.

03
Treatment

It feels warm and prickly. The cooling takes the edge off, and the session moves quickly.

04
Serum and aftercare

We apply a post-treatment serum and walk you through aftercare. No makeup for at least 24 hours.

Recovery

What the week after actually feels like

Most people are back to their normal day right away. Here's what to expect as your skin heals.

First 12–24 hrs
Warmth and redness

Skin feels and looks like a mild sunburn, then settles.

First 24 hrs
No makeup

Skip makeup for at least the first 24 hours so the treated skin can close up.

Days 3–7
Sandpaper texture

Skin feels rough, and you may see tiny dark specks called peppering. No flaking or peeling.

Around day 7
Results show

The roughness clears and skin looks brighter and more even, continuing to improve as collagen builds.

Let the sandpaper phase run its course The rough texture and peppering are treated pigment and old skin cells on their way out. Scrubbing or picking at them doesn't speed anything up, and it can irritate healing skin. Leave it alone and it clears on its own.

Pairing treatments

LaseMD Ultra and Potenza RF microneedling

The two work at different depths. LaseMD handles the surface: tone, spots, and texture. Potenza RF microneedling works deeper, firming and rebuilding structural collagen. If your goals include both, we'll plan the order and spacing at your consultation.

LaseMD can also be part of the same plan as Pure PDGF or injectables. On the scalp, the same laser is used for UltraMD hair restoration.

Skin Types

Used across a wide range of skin tones

Many lasers carry a real risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, darkening after treatment, in deeper skin tones. LaseMD's gentle, shallow approach makes it an option for many skin types that other resurfacing lasers aren't. Deeper skin tones typically start with more conservative settings and build gradually.

Common questions

LaseMD Ultra, answered

How is LaseMD Ultra different from other lasers?

LaseMD Ultra is non-ablative and fractional. It treats small columns of skin without removing the surface layer, unlike ablative lasers such as CO2. That means much less downtime, about a day of redness and a week of rough texture rather than one to two weeks of open, healing skin. The trade-off is that results build over a series instead of in one aggressive session.

What is the downtime after LaseMD Ultra?

Expect sunburn-like warmth and redness for 12 to 24 hours. For three to seven days after, your skin will feel rough, like fine sandpaper, and you may see tiny dark specks called peppering. It does not flake or peel. No makeup for at least 24 hours. Most people go about their normal day right away.

Does LaseMD Ultra hurt? Do you use numbing cream?

We don't use numbing cream. It feels warm and prickly, and a cooling device runs alongside the laser throughout the treatment, which is all most people need to stay comfortable.

How should I prepare for LaseMD Ultra?

Stop retinols and exfoliating acids seven days before your appointment. Avoid sunburn and self-tanner beforehand. Come with clean, bare skin, with no makeup, sunscreen, or other products on. We'll go over everything you need for aftercare before you leave.

When will I see results from LaseMD Ultra?

Around seven days, once the rough texture clears, most people see brighter, more even skin. Collagen keeps building for months after each session, so results continue to improve over a series.

How many LaseMD Ultra treatments will I need?

Most people do a series of three to five sessions spaced three to four weeks apart, especially for sun damage and pigment. Some come back for maintenance a few times a year after that. We'll build a plan around your skin and goals at your consultation.

Is LaseMD Ultra safe for darker skin tones?

It's an option for many skin tones, including darker ones, because it works gently near the surface. Deeper skin tones usually start with more conservative settings and build up over the series to keep the risk of hyperpigmentation low. Our Fitzpatrick skin type quiz will give you a sense of where you fall before your consultation.

Can LaseMD Ultra be combined with other treatments?

Yes. It pairs well with Potenza RF microneedling, which works deeper in the skin, and with Pure PDGF. Through October 31, all three are bundled as Total Skin Rejuvenation on our specials page. We'll recommend the order and spacing at your consultation.
