Traditional dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid) add volume immediately by physically filling space under the skin — like inflating a balloon. They are absorbed by the body in 6–18 months. Sculptra works completely differently: it stimulates your body to produce new collagen in the treated areas. There is no immediate result — instead, your own skin rebuilds over 3–6 months, and the results last 2+ years. Sculptra is less about "filling" and more about "rebuilding." Many patients use both: Sculptra for structural foundation and HA fillers for precise detailing.

A commonly referenced guideline is one vial per decade of age — so a 45-year-old might need approximately 4–5 vials across their full treatment plan. Most patients receive 2–3 vials per session across 2–3 sessions. The exact number depends on the degree of volume loss, treatment areas, and desired outcome. We'll develop a precise vial plan during your consultation. Our Sculptra Structure Series (3 vials) is an excellent starting point for most patients.

Clinical studies show Sculptra results lasting 25 months or more — making it one of the longest-lasting aesthetic injectables available. Because the collagen produced is real and structural (not a foreign gel that gets absorbed), the results are genuinely durable. The 12-month mark is typically where the most dramatic improvement is visible, with results maintained well beyond that. Periodic maintenance sessions every 18–24 months help sustain the outcome over time.

Sculptra is reconstituted with lidocaine, providing comfort during injection. Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand. Most patients describe it as similar to any other injectable — brief pinches or pressure. There may be some tenderness, swelling, or bruising afterward that resolves within a few days. The 5-5-5 massage protocol (5 minutes, 5 times daily, for 5 days) is the most important post-care step and takes only a few minutes each time.

Sculptra requires patience — and that's the point. The immediate swelling post-treatment is not your result; it fades in 1–3 days. Real improvement becomes visible at around 6–8 weeks and continues to build. Most patients see their most meaningful improvement 3–6 months after their first session, with results continuing to improve through and past the 12-month mark. This gradual reveal is precisely why Sculptra results look so natural — there's no "before and after" moment, just a slow, convincing improvement.

Yes — and combination protocols are where the most transformative results occur. Sculptra is commonly combined with Potenza RF Microneedling for whole-depth skin tightening, neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport, Daxxify) for muscle relaxation and wrinkle smoothing, and HA fillers for precise spot correction that Sculptra's gradual approach doesn't address. Before: Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil), alcohol, and retinol products for 1 week prior. Arrive well-hydrated with clean skin and no active sunburn. After: Follow the 5-5-5 massage rule — this is critical. Avoid excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga), strenuous exercise, and direct sun exposure for 24–48 hours. Sleep on your back if possible the first night. Apply SPF daily to treated areas going forward. We provide full written aftercare instructions at every appointment.
