What lip filler does — and what it doesn’t
Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid gel injected into and around the lips to restore volume, refine shape, define the border, or soften the fine lines above the lip. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a sugar molecule your skin already makes. It binds water, which is why good lip filler feels soft rather than firm, and why it can be dissolved if you ever want it gone.
Enhancement, not transformation
I spent years in trauma and cardiac ICU nursing before I ever held a syringe of filler. That background shapes how I inject lips. I know what sits under the surface, I plan around the blood vessels, and hyaluronidase is in the room at every appointment.
My goal is almost never “bigger.” It’s lips that fit your face — the right proportion between upper and lower lip, a border that catches light, corners that don’t turn down. Sometimes that takes a full syringe. Sometimes it takes half that, and I’ll tell you so.

Restoring lost volume
Lips thin gradually with age as collagen and fat pads change. Filler brings back the fullness you had, rather than creating a shape you never did.
Balancing asymmetry
Most people have one side fuller than the other. Small, targeted amounts can even things out. Perfect symmetry isn’t the goal — faces aren’t symmetrical — but noticeable imbalance usually improves.
Defining the border
A crisper vermilion border and a lifted cupid’s bow can change how your lips read in photos without adding much volume at all.

What happens, step by step

01Consultation
We talk about your goals, look at your whole face, and review your health history, including cold sores, medications, and any past filler.

02Numbing
Topical numbing sits for about 15 to 20 minutes. Every filler we use also contains lidocaine.

03Treatment
The injection itself usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. We check shape and balance together before you leave.

04Two-week follow-up
Once swelling is gone, we look at the settled result. If a small adjustment would improve balance, this is when it happens.

The first two weeks
Day two is not your result. Here’s what’s normal, so nothing catches you off guard.
Lips feel tender and look fuller than they will end up. Ice gently and avoid pressing or massaging unless we ask you to.
Swelling is usually at its most visible. Bruising and small bumps are common. Skip heat, alcohol, and hard workouts for 24 to 48 hours.
Most swelling has resolved. Any bruising is fading. Shape looks more like the final result but is still softening.
The filler has integrated. This is the result we evaluate together at your follow-up.

- If you can, pause non-prescribed supplements that increase bruising — fish oil, vitamin E, and high-dose ginkgo — for about a week. Never stop a prescribed blood thinner without talking to your prescriber.
- Tell us if you get cold sores. Filler can trigger an outbreak, and a preventive antiviral may be worth discussing.
- Avoid alcohol the night before and the day of treatment.
- Don’t book lip filler within two weeks of dental work or a big event.
After treatment, call (907) 921-4281 right away if you notice skin turning pale, gray, or mottled, or pain that gets worse instead of better. These are uncommon, but they need prompt attention.
